Top 10 TV Shows of 2010

This year many of my favourite shows have come to an end, but many others have begun, which has made 2010 a great year for Television and to give you an insight into some of my favourite programmes of the year, here is my Top 10 TV Shows of 2010.

10. Modern Family

This was a show I knew absolutely nothing about before hand and it was just my mum and dad one day told me I should watch the first episode because it was really funny.

So I started watching the episode and 5 minutes in I was laughing out loud. Those of you that have seen the show know the part I will explain but Phil, one of the dad in the family of 5 is talking to the camera and explaining how he’s a “cool dad” and he texts “L.O.L. laugh out loud. O.M.G. oh my God. W.T.F. why the face.”

It was just hilarious and from then on I loved the show. I still haven’t gotten around to watching all the episodes of the first series and the second series is already airing so I really need to get down to watching them because the cast is just incredible with every person hand crafted to fit their role amazingly.

A few of my favourite characters as well as Phil the “cool dad” are Manny, the son of Gloria who is very mature for his age and does many adult things inappropriate for his age and Cameron who is gay partners with Mitchell who is very overly dramatic and his bubbly outgoing personality is hilarious to watch. The characters are amazing but the comedy factor that they create when they interact is what this show amazing and one of my favourites of 2010.

9. The IT Crowd

Jen, Roy and Moss were back again in 2010 for the hilariously funny IT Crowd.  If you have not seen any episodes of this trio and the little adventures they get up to in the IT department of Reynholm Industries, then you are missing out on some amazing characters in the show and great comedy that has earned the makers BAFTA and Emmy awards.

Series 4 saw Moss make an appearance on Countdown, being one of the funniest episodes of anything I’ve seen this year, and we also got to witness Moss and Roy bunking off work and Jen pretending to be an Italian interpreter to clinch a business deal for the company.

This show brings me and many others lots of laughs and is a great British sit-com I’d recommend to anyone.

8. Take Me Out

“Remember girls, no likey, no lighty “.

Yes all the way back in January of 2010 a new style of dating game show took to our screens courtesy of ITV and hosted by comedian Paddy McGuinness. This new show took 30 single women and lined them up each week and sent in four brave fellas each week to see if they could bag themselves a date with one of the lucky ladies.

Seeing losers take to the stage and getting rejected and seeing those popular lads turning down some of the ladies in order to pick the ones with the “best personality” of course.

Paddy’s charm and wit with the bachelors and bachelorettes was something I looked forward to every week and with a new series starting last Saturday, it seems we have the same old Paddy back yet again with a whole new bunch of ladies and brave gents to be paired up. It looks like I will be looking forward to Saturday nights yet again.

7. The Inbetweeners

Potentially the final TV series of E4’s hit show, The Inbetweeners  didn’t disappoint. We join the 4 boys in 6th form before some of them head off for University and we get the same brilliant humour from the whole cast that the UK audience has fallen in love with.

They are also doing well across the Atlantic now from what I’ve been hearing and a lad’s holiday style film set for a release in 2012 will see the antics of Will, Simon, Jay and Neil abroad in party town Malia.

It’s something I cannot wait to see, but for now I will more than happily watch episodes from the 3 series so far again and again as it’s definitely one of the funniest shows I have ever seen.

6. The Walking Dead

This horror TV series that aired in the UK in early November, took the post-apocalyptic zombie story and stuck it into 6 episodes full of brilliant gore and tense excitement.

The first few episodes of this short series especially made me take notice as the way it was filmed and the detail of all the sets and Zombies in particular were magnificent to look at (kind of). The story started with a man waking up from a coma and finding himself in a post-apocalyptic world and finding fellow survivors, their story of survival is told as they travel across deserted US terrain in order to stay alive and keep away from the undead.

The series finale may not be as fantastic as the rest of the series in my opinion, but it was still a great show and with a second series of 13 episodes scheduled for next year, I’m definitely going to carry on following the groups efforts at staying alive.

5. The X Factor

Love it or hate it people watch it in their millions each week and there’s no doubting that the publicity behind this blockbuster reality TV show is bigger than ever in 2010. From the row about Gamu to finding out absolutely everything about Cher the press had the lot… plus Wagner.

It’s no denying though that the X Factor is a great show and although most people are bored of the standard show and would maybe like to see a change, it brings us entertainment dragged out over 2 nights for weeks and a hell of a lot of much needed advertising space for ITV.

Matt was a deserved winner and we also got a few more acts I expect to be in the charts in future including Rebecca, One Direction and Cher.

4. Flash Forward

This show was considered a massive disappointment to most people but for me one of the worst things in TV this year was that we never got a second series of Flash Forward.

You could tell from the very beginning of the show late in 2009 that it was from the creators of LOST as the jumps in time and unanswered questions were there from the off. This was also accompanied with some amazing action and great tense scenes where you just did not know how they would end.

The cliff hanger in the series finale put a second series of the show on a plate but unfortunately the show was cancelled and now Flash Forward  will go into a pile of shows that never took off, and in my opinion, undeservedly.

3. The Event

LOST ended this year and we thought that the days of confusion and unanswered questions in TV shows may settle down a bit now. Then The Event started and it’s all started again.

This show which was hyped so much on channel 4 about an event that was going to occur but was kept in secret till the premiere was a great marketing plan and then after the first episode I was hooked.

Kidnappings, murders, running away from the police and airplanes disappearing out of the sky. That’s how to start a TV show and now being 9 episodes in I can honestly say I do not have a clue what is going on, but it has something to do with aliens and the president. 🙂

It is a very cliché show, but I love it and can’t wait to have questions answered for me and see what other events happen throughout the series.

2. LOST

2010 was the finale year for many things that I have loved over the last few years and one of those was definitely the final series of LOST.

Ever since the Pilot episode back in 2004 I have been hooked on this phenomenal show that has everything from the incredible cast to the brilliant plot twists, full of tense drama and amazing action and unanswered questions that both drove me mad, and kept me excited for the next weeks episode as soon as that one ended.

Many questioned the writer’s decision to turn LOST from a very good story of survivors stranded on an island to and confusing time travelling plot, but I for one absolutely loved the twists and turns and the journey the writers were taking us on each week of every series.

To witness a show such as LOST and watch every episode from start to finish was something I had yet to experience and I have to say it’ll always be remembered for me as one of the best TV shows I’ve seen and probably ever will see.

1. Dexter

It takes something to beat the final series of LOST, but I have to say that the 4th series of Dexter was probably the best series of any show I have seen.

For those of you who have not heard of the serial killer who works for Miami metro police, murdering the bad guys of Miami then I really suggest you watch them from the start, as Dexter is a truly amazing show.

Unbelievable tension, on the edge of your seat stuff almost every week and great twists in a brilliant plot is just why I love this show. Also Michael C Hall who plays the part of Dexter is one of the best things about the show, because it’s his captivating performances in every single episode of the programme that makes it so believable and he really does a great job at making us feel sorry for him one minute and then see his anger and “dark side” moments later. Pure brilliance.

The 5th series has just come to it’s finale also, and I can say that this show still has so much life left in it and I cannot see this ending anytime soon. So get the DVD’s or watch them online from series one, because Dexter is not only my number one show of 2010, but my number one show of all time.
